Local Dining Out Report for October 2015

Wednesday 28th October 2015

Local Dining Out Group Dinner - at The Fox and Goose, Coombe Bissett

.

Do you find that you think you know a place, you may go past it quite often but you haven't visited it for some time. Well this could be true for The Fox and Goose at Coombe Bissett.
We chose to dine at The Fox and Goose, partly through requests from our dining group and partly through our own past experiences. We were not let down on this choice.

Having arranged the evening with Keith and Sue the proprietors, everyone had made their choices from six main courses and six desserts. After a short journey, by coach from our local pickup points, we were soon at The Fox and Goose, thanks to Geoff our Herrington's driver for looking after us on the evening. Welcomed at the door by Keith and his team we were shown to our beautifully laid tables, within easy reach of the bar. Drinks followed and an opportunity to chat.

Details were taken of who was sitting at each of the three tables and matched with our menu plan. This allowed for each complete table to be served in turn, everyone at that table eating together.

It would take too long to describe all the main courses but from my point of view my steak & mushroom pie was delicious, the pastry was lovely, the contents of the pie tasty and it came with new potatoes, carrots, courgettes and thin parsnip chips plus a lovely gravy. I could eat it again just describing it! Around me, the curry, the gammon and more, were equally well received.

Desserts followed after a brief interval and they all looked well presented and went down very well. My cheese and biscuits was good with three types of cheese, biscuits and butter.

After eating we had our monthly raffle. We have continued supporting The British Hear Foundation charity. Our thanks to Jenny for selling the tickets and her team on their table for folding them up. Our top prize this month was a £25.00 dining voucher donated by Keith for a return dinner at The Fox & Goose. Our thanks to Keith and Sue for this donation. We also had several prizes donated by diners plus some wine donated by Dave at the High Corner Inn from a previous months visit. With lower costs on prizes we managed to make a profit of £49.00 on the evening which added to the £22.00 from March gives us a running total of £71.00. We will continue to raise money for the British Heart Foundation until the end of 2015.

Progress has now been made on our future events and I was able to announce that next month, on Wednesday 25th November, we will be dining at The Silver Plough at Pitton near Salisbury. Again this restaurant had been mentioned to me before. Each location is different and has different qualities. I think we will find this one yet another unique experience. Tickets £24.00. Details are on our Next Dining Out Notification page.

Christmas is getting ever nearer and we will be in November in a few days. Our Christmas Dinner is all organised for Wednesday 16th December and we are now selling tickets at a very reasonable £29.00 per person. This year we will be dining in the Function Room at the Woodfalls Inn. We have booked a Three Course Dinner. There is a really nice menu with choices plus further Tea/Coffee and mints to finish. The evening will follow our normal Local Dining Out format except we have arranged for a singer, Debbie C. to entertain us through the evening. We include travelling by coach to the dinner and home again as required but in the ticket price.

Lastly we have final news on our Local Dining Out Dinner on the Watercress Railway next year. The date is confirmed as Sunday 10th April 2016. This will be lunch time dining. We have booked one complete carriage which holds 48 people. We have 59 people on our original list. The price for the day will be £63.00 in total. We are now taking firm bookings either by a non- refundable deposit £20.00, or full payment of £63.00. We will try to notify everyone on our list as soon as possible and tickets will be allocated on a first come basis from the list. We will set up a waiting list for any new people. More details to follow.

Returning to our evening on Wednesday. We drew our raffle as time approached 10pm and several luck people went home with sweets, chocolates, gifts, wine, plant and one very lucky person with the restauarant voucher. Our special "Ticket Raffle" completed the evening, the prize was a box of Halloween style cakes.

Our thanks must go to Keith, Sue and their attentive young assistants who made our evening really special. We always hope that some of our group will return to some of the restaurants we have visited. I think this might be on my list. We have a few photos from the evening below.
