Local Dining Out Report for December 2015

Wednesday 16th December 2015

Local Dining Out Group Dinner - at The Woodfalls Inn at Woodfalls

Christmas celebrations have arrived!

We held our Local Dining Out Group Christmas Dinner 2015 at The Woodfalls Inn on Wednesday 16th December. The function room had been beautifully laid out with six circular tables through the centre of the room, for our 44 diners. As you arrived you could find your table using a table planner at the entrance to the room and place markers on each table. Seating was organised as requested by different groups. Space had been left at the far end for our singer and for dancing and we had a large table for our bumper raffle.

Some of our diners, who lived locally, walked to the event, a few drove themselves but a majority arrived on our coach, coming from Fordingbridge, Woodgreen, Hale and Woodfalls. We did have a slight problem with turning the coach around as we arrived at the Woodfalls Inn and ended up on rather a mystery tour through Redlynch and Lover, arriving a little later than planned. Still it all added to the fun of the evening! Once seated everyone had a chance to have a drink and to chat before we started eating.

There were Christmas crackers and party poppers at each place setting. Hats were donned and jokes read plus the cracking which added to the atmosphere. Our starters arrived and we all tucked in. My choice of smoked salmon and crayfish terrine, with watercress and a dill lemon dressing plus some lovely bread was delicious. Having said that I understand that the alternative choices of soup, pate or salad were equally good.

Debbie C, our singer for the evening, provided some background recorded music from early in the evening and then started singing some quieter numbers whilst we were eating. Our main courses arrived, I had chosen the turkey option, as above. We had dishes of brussel sprouts and mixed mediterranean style vegetables. Other main courses were, game & winter vegetable pie, risotto, haddock or duck. Our desserts followed, again really nice, with choices of meringue, profiteroles, Christmas pudding or ice cream.

After the dessert, coffee or tea were available for eveyone to help themselves and mince pies were passed around each table. Sue Harris went up to the microphone and I wondered what was going on! To my complete suprise, I was called up to the front and presented with a lovely bottle of red wine and some garden gift vouchers as a thank you from everyone for organising the dinners through the year. My thanks again for such a lovely gesture,
I had no idea - really!

During the dinner Sue and Jenny went from table to table with raffle tickets for our bumper Christmas raffle. We had organised a selection of prizes which wre displayed at one end of the room. Several people had arrived with promised prizes which probably doubled the original number. Our special thanks must go to Julie from Woodgreen Community Shop for providing a nice hamper, to Vee at The Woodfalls Inn for two bottles of wine and to Marie for some fresh eggs. The raffle tickets were all expertly folded and put in a large cardboard box. Our thanks to those who helped with the folding. Just before the draw took place, I made a presentation to Sue Harris, of a complimentary ticket for our January Dining Out, as the only person who had attended all 12 dinners through 2015.

The raffle took quite a while with so many prizes. Champagne, whisky, wine, chocolates, biscuits, shortbread and more. We managed to make a profit of £80.00 which will be added to the £100 we alread have from our raffles in September to November. Our donation will soon be going to the British Heart Foundation. After the draw Debbie C. continued singing and several people were able to dance to some more lively numbers. The evening seemed go so quickly! I understand that's the usual feeling when you're enjoying yourselves! Sadly we had to board the coach home but I'm pretty sure everyone had a good evening, especially from comments received later.

Our final thanks must go, firstly to Vee and her team for organising such a lovely evening, the room, the food and the whole dining experience. Next to Debbie C. for providing the background music and her fantastic singing through the evening. Then to Alan at Herrington's Coaches for getting us to and returning us home safely from the dinner. Also to everyone who brought and donated raffle prizes. Lastly to everyone who attended and supported this, our special Christmas Local Dining Out evening, the final evening of 2015.
